I think sometimes we do need to reflect that we have one striker at the club .... £7m Antonio ... while Arsenal have Aubameyang & Lacazette (cost £100m) plus £72m Pepe and two players on loan from Real Madrid (vs Craig Dawson on loan from WATFORD).

I'm not sure whether we really believe we can beat teams from the Big 6 and thats obviously the first step .... but requires more quality and depth.
Should still have won though. Lacazette thrashes a shot wide and we are punished because Soucek is back in position to defend. And not going to criticise Dawson for getting back to defend .... again we were punished because he got back TOO quickly and couldnt get out of the way. Half a step or a step slower and he would have cleared.

we scored 2 of theirs, we hit the post, had one saved by the defenders arse .... we were unlucky not to win by at least 2 goals

That's the best way to look at it. I'm still stunned we managed to salvage a point.

Massive summer for us

We need to bring in about 8 players and jettison 3

That game is a game we might have won 4-3 or lost 2-0 on another day. It is what it is. Another mid/top of the table game thst was really entertaining.

Looks like Cresswell is a scapegoat for yesterday. He was dealing with Saka and Chambers who kept overlapping because Lingard wasn't tracking back. It was clear that shape was the problem and that's where Moyes failed yesterday, not changing to a back 5 at HT.
Saying that, we should have won the game at 3-0 and had chances in the second half.

Personally i'm worried about the form of our one striker Antonio and dare I say it a few games now where Soucek has struggled to get in the game.

Our squad is paper thin and imbalanced, it was clear that eventually it would take it's toll. Fortunately not as much as it could have done.

goose - You're right of course. The reality is the traditional top 6 are ahead of us, and probably by quite some way. Then you have Leicester, and Everton look decent. So all being even the best we can hope for next season is 8th/9th. A bit depressing, yes, but that's the way it is.

That's a terrible Arsenal side and I expect to be dictating to them not the other way round. To draw from three nil is unforgivably shit from Moyes. He is spurning a rare opportunity with his inferiority complex. Watch the wheels fully come off against Wolves.

As much as I would like to see us have a European run we would need to sign 7-8 players in the summer to allow us to do so without doing a Burnley and having to fight relegation at the same time. It ain’t happening.

i've been pretty calm with any defeats this season because the good has far out weighed the bad.

but yesterday had be fuming - mostly the game management & john moss.

after calming down i've realised that they clearly are a much better side than us - same with liverpool, everton and spurs. if we finish above any of them it will be a great achievement. they have squads full of international players and are better than most teams they play.
we have had to fight for every win and every point - and that will be the same until the end of the season.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Arsenal - Official Match Thread FT 3-3
In terms of the squad, as of yesterday’s game we were without fornals, ogbonna, Arthur, Randolph and Yarmolenko. So arguably three first teamers. Most and two subs. But with that our subs bench contained two goalies (who were both deemed by the powers that be to be so bad that we had to sign Randolph to be reserve ahead of them) two youngsters who were never likely to get on, a centre back who seems destined to never play for us again and a player who needs to give chambers a ring after yesterday to find out what the secret is to coming back from an acl

Moyes doesn’t really have many options at the moment, it’s true, but shutting up shop at 3-0 was just asking for trouble. Chambers had cresswell on toast all game and yet we didn’t bring Johnson/fredericks on to help in front or change the system or adapt, we just sat back. It never works. It’s really annoying as, just like 15/16, you can see all our hard work going out the window now when we do have a genuine opportunity

Just about the only out and out striker available for permanent transfer in January was Josh King. Taking Lingard on loan instead, and keeping our powder dry for the summer, was a very good decision.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Arsenal - Official Match Thread FT 3-3
The irony with all the criticism of Moyes is that he could still lead us to our best season, place wise, since 1985/86. Similarities to that season are clear with the fact that others have mentioned is that he is doing it with a small squad that generally has been lucky with injuries in key positions for a change. We seem to have survived the key injuries to Antonio and Ogbonna as but will not have been as lucky if it had been say Rice and Soucek out for 6 weeks. Can't see Noble and Lanzini having the same effect at either end of the pitch!

Hoping that unlike 86/87 the board realise that the squad is paper thin and invest and recruit well. The worrying thing is we were in a similar situation after Slaven's last season and we took several great leaps backwards!

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Arsenal - Official Match Thread FT 3-3
In fairness chill he didn’t refuse it - he said he didn’t want to spend loads on a striker who wasn’t exactly what he wanted longer term when he would be more likely tonged what he wants in the summer

Quite why we didn’t loan one is beyond me though

Again we come back to the reality that beyond our best available starting eleven the squad is paper thin and not top eight EPL standard.

_______

Moyes has no problem with it. He even refused money for a striker in Jan.

It’s all very well criticising the Moyes’s selections from the bench but unfair to him when failing to acknowledge the paucity of alternative choices sitting there.

Again we come back to the reality that beyond our best available starting eleven the squad is paper thin and not top eight EPL standard.

A team can only be taken so far and then due to wear and rear its strength in depth will be found out. Arsenal turned up with a better starting eleven and a better bench than us and had Moyes been their manager they would have won comfortably. And if his former pupil Arteta had been managing us the Gunners would have been out of sight.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Arsenal - Official Match Thread FT 3-3
We are 5th with a squad that should be somewhere near 12th, we have no depth in all key positions. Arsenal brought on a 70 million pound sub and we brought on Noble and Fredericks. We have no recognised striker and no cover in centre midfield.

Enjoy it fellas we are well above where we should be, we have a very good manager that given enough funding and transfer windows will put together a very competitive team in this league.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Arsenal - Official Match Thread FT 3-3
A team like Leicester would have probably gone on to put about five past Arsenal yesterday after going 3-0 up so early. I agree, I don’t think Moyes or the players knew what to do, and once they got one back, the writing was on the wall.

threesixty 10:56 Mon Mar 22
Re: ⚽ West Ham v Arsenal - Official Match Thread FT 3-3
I think teams like ours are not used to being 3-0 up so early in a game. We don't have the game management for that situation. All it takes is for a team to step up a gear and mentally we don't know what to do.It's something we have to work on.

I also think Ogbonna would have known more of what to do in terms of helping out Creswell etc... We also missed fornals in terms of solid midfield work.

Its just one of those days really. What I'm thankful for is that we still havent lost 2 games in a row this season. Considering the teams we've been up against back to back this season I think that is a phenomenal achievement by us.
